The High Court has issued a four week ruling upon the government asking why former DNCC councillor Tarekuzzaman Rajib should not be granted bail in connection with a case filed by ACC.
The bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Ahmed Sohel issued the ruling on Tuesday after hearing a bail petition virtually.
Advocate Shiuli Khanom accompanied by M Ferdous Al Bashir stood for the bail petition. While, Advocate Kurshid Alam Khan and Deputy Attorney General (DAG) AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the state.
Earlier on February 6, a Dhaka court rejected a bail petition filed by former Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) councillor of Ward 33 Rajib.
Crackdown on casinos
On October 19 last year, RAB arrested Rajib from a flat in Bashundhara RA, during the crackdown on illegal casinos, on allegations of extortion and encroachment by terrorizing people.
They seized seven bottles of foreign liquor, a foreign pistol, a magazine with three bullets, Tk33,000 cash and his passport from his apartment.
RAB also raided his home at Mohammadia Housing Society and office in Mohammadpur and seized illegal firearms and liquor.
Soon after his arrest, Jubo League expelled him as a joint general secretary of its Dhaka Metropolitan North unit.
A month before the arrest, he had gone into hiding after the government launched a crackdown on illegal casinos.
On October 20, RAB handed Rajib over to Bhatara police station and filed the two cases against him.
A number of people, mostly ruling Awami League’s youth affiliate Jubo League, were arrested and allegations of extortion, contract-grabbing, and running illegal gambling business against them surfaced during the crackdown.
