Driver sentenced to 9 years after cop killed in road crash

A Feni court sentenced a truck driver to altogether nine years in prison under different sections of the Penal Code, 1860, in connection with a road accident that killed a cop four years ago.

The truck driver Alamgir Hossain was convicted by the court of Feni Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain on Sunday afternoon, confirmed Assistant Public Prosecutor Abul Hossain.

Alamgir has been absconding since he secured bail a day after the arrest

The deceased has been identified as constable Rafiqul Islam of Feni Highway police outpost.

On January 20, of 2016, policemen of Feni Highway police were on duty in a car at the Feni region of the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway, said APP Abul.

A truck driven by Alam rear-ended the police vehicle, and as a result both the vehicles fell into a roadside ditch.

Four policemen, injured in the accident, were taken to Feni General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Rafiqul dead.

The same year a case was filed by Assistant Sub-Inspector Masud Bhuiyan, and later, on May 17, a charge sheet was framed by Assistant Sub-Inspector Ramiz Uddin Sarkar.

The court took testimony of 10 witnesses before reaching the verdict.
