High Court chides lawyer for trying to free top criminal

The High Court has scorned a senior lawyer after he managed to free a top criminal by giving police false information about the latter's bail. Justice Miftah Uddin Choudhury and Justice ANM Bashir Ullah's bench chided senior lawyer Abdul Baset Mojumder for his actions on Tuesday, reports Bangla Tribune. Deputy Attorney General Sheikh AKM Moniruzzaman told reporters that Chittagong’s top criminal Abdul Quddus came to the High Court onTuesday seeking anticipatory bail in a murder case. “The court rejected his bail plea and ordered him to jail instead. But Baset misled police about the order and asked Quddus to leave the court premises,” he added. The court summoned the lawyer immediately after the matter was brought to its attention. Baset was first scolded by the judges for what he had done and told that he would have to go to jail if his client did not surrender. Supreme Court Bar Council President Joynul Abedin and Secretary Mahbub Uddin Khokon apologised to the court on Baset’s behalf and promised to produce the accused before the court. Baset was allowed to leave the court after his client Quddus surrendered to police.
