ATN News journalist Sumon placed on one-day remand

A Dhaka court on Monday placed Imran Hossain Sumon, a senior reporter of ATN News, on a one-day remand in a case filed under the Digital Security Act (DSA) and the Pornography Control Act (PCA).

A virtual court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Atiqul Islam issued the order after Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Nasir Uddin, who is also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, produced him in court, seeking a four-day remand for interrogation on Monday.

Opposing the remand petition, defence lawyer Tuhin Hawlader submitted a bail petition for his client but the court rejected the bail plea.

Earlier on Sunday, police arrested Imran in Dhaka’s Hatirjheel area in the aforementioned case.

Sumon was shown to have been arrested at Pallabi police station at 8:30pm on the day, said Mudasser Hossain, Detective Branch (DB) Deputy Commissioner (Serious Crime Investigation).

Police said the senior reporter was arrested in connection with a case filed by Akhi Bhadra, senior presenter of ATN News, over obscene messages sent to her phone.

Earlier, police nabbed a youth in connection with the same case, who told investigators that he had sent the messages on being influenced by Sumon.

The case was handed over to the Detective Branch on July 14
