The High Court has stayed a government decision that scrapped the freedom fighter status of 119 members of Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB).
The bench of Justice JBM Hassan came up with the order on Tuesday following a virtual hearing of two separate writ petitions in this regard.
Barrister Abdul Qaium appeared on behalf of both writ petitions, while Deputy Attorney General Samarendranath Biswas represented the state at the virtual hearing.
According to lawyers, the stay order will remain in force till the reopening of the court following the ongoing general holidays.
Mollah Mosarrof Hossain, among 87 others from Begurgathi village at Bagherhat, and Fazlul Haque, among 32 others of Tangail Sadar upazila, filed two writ petitions with the High Court.
On June 8, The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs cancelled the gazettes of 1,181 freedom fighters. The gazettes were cancelled as per the decision of the 66th meeting of the National Freedom Fighter Council held on December 10, 2019.
Following another writ petition on June 17, the High Court also stayed the ministry’s decision to scrap the freedom fighter status for Md Abu Taher of Nabinagar in Brahmanbaria.
