United Hospital fire: Writ seeks cancellation of hospital licence

A writ has been filed with the High Court seeking a cancellation of the licence of United Hospital in the aftermath of a fire incident, which claimed the lives of five patients.

The writ also seeks an HC order for a judicial probe to be conducted with the aim of providing compensation to the families of those who died in the fire.

Two Supreme Court lawyers, Barrister Redwan Ahmed Runjib and Barrister ABM Hamidul Mishbah, filed the writ on Monday with the bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim as a public interest litigation.

The petitioners’ lawyer, Barrister Aneek R Haque, said they were seeking a rule asking the government to explain why a case of murdershould not be filed against the hospital holding them responsible for the five deaths.

The secretary of the health ministry, director general of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), inspector general of police, commissioner of police, fire service, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk), and United Hospital were made respondents in the writ.

On Wednesday, five patients died in a devastating fire incident at the makeshift coronavirus unit of United Hospital in Gulshan, Dhaka.
