Tariqul Islam Mumin, suspended vice-president of Chhatra League's central committee, has given his confessional statement in a case lodged for document forgery at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Yeasmin Ara, recorded his statement on Friday, after Tejgaon police station Office-in-Charge Inspector Shamim-ur-Rashid, the case investigation officer, produced him in court with a plea to record his statement under section 164 of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in the case.
In his statement, the accused admitted that he was involved in the incident.
Tejgaon police station Sub-Inspector Md Farid Miah, also the general recording officer of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Friday.
After recording his statement, the court sent Tariqul to jail.
Earlier, the others accused in the case, Farhad, a North South University student, Fatima, an office assistant at the PMO, and another person named Nazim Uddin, gave their confessional statements to the magistrate court on different dates.
They were also sent to jail after the court recorded their statements.
According to the case details, the Ministry of Education sent to the PMO for the prime minister to select, a document with a shortlist of candidates being considered for the post of treasurer at North South University, .
After being approved by the prime minister, the document was replaced with a forged copy of a different name before being sent to Bangabhaban for the president’s approval.
In preliminary investigations, investigators found that Tariqul, vice-president of the Chhatra League central committee, Farhad, a student at North South University, and Fatima, an office assistant at the PMO, were involved in the forgery.
On May 5, Md Rafiqul Alam, director-7 at the PMO, filed a case with Tejgaon police station against the accused.
Later, police arrested Tariqul from Bhola. Farhad and another person were detained from Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area.
