A Jhalakathi court has sentenced two men to life term imprisonment in a case filed over the series of bomb blasts across Bangladesh in 2005.
Jhalakathi Special Tribunal-2 Judge SKM Tofayel Hasan handed down the verdict in the presence of the convicted individuals on Wednesday.
The two men are Ziaur Rahman, son of Younus Molla from Bikna area of Jhalakathi, and Farid Howladar, son of late Mosharrof Howladar from Keota village of Rajapur upazila.
State Prosecutor Mostafizur Rahman Monu said: “On August 17, 2005 bombs went off in five different places in Jhalakathi, as in the rest of the country. Police filed a case under the Explosives Substances Act with Jhalakathi Sadar Police Station in this connection.”
Farid was arrested in injured condition and Ziaur’s name was revealed through the statement of Abu Sulaiman Sujan, an accused in another bomb blast case.
It may be recalled that on August 17, 2005, around 500 bombs went off at 300 locations in 63 of the 64 districts across the country.
The bombs exploded in the span of half an hour from 11:30am, for which responsibility was claimed by the banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). .
