A legal notice has been served to the Energy Secretary and Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) asking why the maximum retail price (MRP) should not be mentioned on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders.
The respondents have been asked to reply within a week to the notice moved by Supreme Court Lawyer Md Maniruzzaman Lincon, on Tuesday.
Talking to reporters, Lincon said in the absence of MRP, private LPG marketing companies can whimsically raise prices of the fuel item, citing increase of LPG prices in the global market.
“In many cases, the companies, to make a quick buck, increase the gas prices well ahead of a rise in the international market,” he said.
The common people are bearing the brunt of the burden due to the uncontrolled increase of LPG prices, the lawyer maintained.
Unscrupulous retailers will no longer be able to overcharge customers if LPG cylinders are printed with a fixed MRP, he said.
