Benapole port police have arrested a constable for allegedly leaking information to India and sending classified information about Bangladesh.
Deb Prasad Saha, who was working as a constable under Uttara 1 Armed Police Battalion, was arrested on Tuesday.
Benapole port police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mamun Khan said: “Deb was produced before Jessore Senior Judicial Magistrate's court on Tuesday, with a 10-day remand plea for interrogation.”
The court sent the police constable to jail and fixed Thursday for the remand hearing.
Earlier on Sunday, OC Mamun filed a case against him with Benapole port police station accusing him of treason.
According to the case details, Deb served at the Benapole Immigration Department from December 27, 2014 to August 17, 2018. During that time, he frequently traveled to India by crossing the No Man's Land.
While working at Benapole Immigration, Deb met two members of Special Forces, who would sometimes share classified information about Bangladesh to two Indians named S Chakrabarty and Pintu.
In late 2018, Deb sent a USB drive to S Chakrabarty and Pintu, which contained important information about Bangladesh. Fifteen days later, he again sent them another pen drive.
On October 25, this year, The Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Sainik Shahnewaz Shaheen from Dhaka and recovered a USB drive that contained top secret information about Bangladesh.
Shaheen informed DGFI and RAB about how some members of law enforcement were leaking information to India. Later, police formed a probe committee, which discovered a video of a conversation between Deb and a police superintendent of India named Abdullah Aref.
In the video, it was shown that Deb was handing over a pen drive to Aref.
