Pathao rider murder: Accused Suman gives confessional statement

A Dhaka court has recorded a confessional statement of Nuruddin alias Suman, accused of killing Pathao rider Md Milon, 35, on the Mouchak-Malibagh flyover on August 26.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Baki Billah recorded Suman's statement on Monday after Inspector Md Nurul Islam of the Detective Branch (DB) of police, also the investigating officer (IO) of the case, produced him in court.

After recording the statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the court sent him to jail.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Motaleb Hossain, general recording officer of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

Meanwhile, in the early hours of Monday, the accused, Suman, was arrested from Shahjahanpur with deceased Milon’s motorbike and the paper-cutter in his possession, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner Masudur Rahman confirmed.

Later in the day, DB Additional Commissioner Abdul Baten while briefing the media regarding the arrest at the DMP Media Centre, said: “The murder suspect Nuruddin alias Suman took a ride with Milon from Malibagh’s Abul Hotel area on Tk50 contract to go to Gulistan.

“After reaching the uppermost level of the Mouchak-Malibagh flyover, Suman asked Milon to stop the bike saying he dropped something.

“At one point, Suman wanted to ride the bike and told Milon to sit in the back, which Milon refused. They got into an argument which led to Shuman striking Milon at his throat with a paper-cutter and then fleeing the scene with the bike.

“The investigation is still ongoing but the primary investigation suggested that the main motive behind the killing was to seize Milon’s motorbike,” he added.

How was the rider killed?

Police suspects that the attacker stabbed Milon and snatched away his motorbike around 2:30am on August 26.

A case was filed in connection with the murder.

Bleeding profusely, with a deep cut to his throat, Milon ran his way down from the flyover trying to stop the bleeding with his bare hands while asking for help.

He was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for treatment and later was shifted to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital upon the doctor’s advice where he died while undergoing treatment.

Shahjahanpur police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Atikur Rahman had told Dhaka Tribune that Milon spoke to his friend around 2am, little before the incident.

During their phone conversation, Milon told his friend that he was in front of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) office in Malibagh.

According to his family, Milon had been a partner-driver with ridesharing company Pathao.

He had last used the ridesharing app to serve passengers on August 7.

Police and family members suspect that he was giving ride to the attacker on the night of the incident, without using the app.

The motorcycle was missing after the incident.
