25 get life in prison for murder in three districts

At least 25 people were sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday for three murders in Khulna, Narayanganj, and Rangpur.

After much delay, justice was finally served to the families of victims, for crimes committed at least 9-20 years ago.

In Khulna, eight people were sentenced to life in prison by a district court for killing a farmer named Ananda Mandal in Batiaghata upazila of the district.

Khulna Public Safety Disturbance Crime Prevention Tribunal Judge, Md. Saifuzzaman Hero, handed down the verdict on Wednesday.

The court also fined them Taka 10,000 each.

The convicted are, Pramod Mandal, 50, Ashok Mandal, 34, Amar Mandal, 50, Nimai Mandal, 45, Golok Mandal, 35, Ramesh Mandal, 40, Nishakar Biswas, 38, and Bikash Bala.

According to the case statement, the convicts hacked Ananda to death on May 30, 1999. His wife filed a case accusing 21 people. 

Investigating the case, ASP Sirajul Islam submitted a charge sheet on October 20, 2008, against 15 people. While the case was ongoing, two of the accused died.

With the testimonies of 14 people, the court declared its verdict.

In Narayanganj, a court sentenced seven people to life in prison for killing a youth named Arafat.

Additional District and Sessions Judge, Sheikh Razia Sultana, announced the verdict on Wednesday noon.

The convicted are, Sajib, Rifat, Joy,Yousuf, Rafikul, Delowar, and Shamim.

The court also fined them Taka 5,000 each.

The court’s Additional Public Prosecutor (APP), Adv Jasmin Ahmed, confirmed the matter and said: "Three of the convicted were present in court and the remaining four are on the run. 

"With testimonies of 14 witnesses the court sentenced seven and released two  for lack of evidence," she added.

In Rangpur, a special court sentenced ten people to life in prison on Wednesday for murdering farmer Abdus Sattar, 17 years ago.

Rangpur Special Judge Ahsan Tareq delivered the verdict with four of the accused present.  Six others are on the run.

The convicted are, Fulu, Chakmal, Ensan, Montu, Akmal, Monohar, Saiful, Shahjahan, Abed, and Dula Mia.

Public prosecutor Joynal Abedin confirmed the matter and said: "The court has delivered the verdict with the testimonies of 18 people.

"The victim's family is satisfied with the verdict," he added.
