Ex-Sonagazi OC Moazzem moves HC again for bail

Former Sonagazi OC Moazzem Hossain has once again moved the High Court for bail, in the case that he is  facing charges, under the Digital Security Act.

Representing Moazzem, Advocate Rana Kaiser filed a petition with the High Court division on Monday.

The High Court bench of Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman fixed August 6 to hear the matter.

Earlier on July 9, a High Court bench denied bail to the police officer.

Moazzem, who was in charge  of Sonagazi police station in Feni, is being tried for unlawfully recording the statement of Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi, 19, when she pressed charges of sexual harassment in March, against the now suspended madrasa principal Siraj-ud-Doula.

The video was later released on social media amidst widespread protest over a deadly arson attack on Nusrat, allegedly by followers of Siraj-ud-Doula, who had already landed in jail on the sexual abuse charges in April.

It was reported that Moazzem had put up the video.

On May 15, Supreme Court lawyer Syedul Haque Sumon filed a case against Moazzem under the Digital Security Act.

On May 27, the Cyber Tribunal issued a warrant of arrest for Moazzem after the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted a report following an investigation that found evidence supporting the allegations brought against Moazzem.

He was detained in Dhaka on June 16, some 20 days after the court ordered his arrest.

Nusrat Jahan Rafi was doused with kerosene, and set on ablaze on the roof of her madrasa on April 6, within days after filing the sexual abuse complaint against the principal. Nusrat ultimately died from the burn injuries at the DMCH.

The case sparked mass protests in Bangladesh, and shone a spotlight on the vulnerability of victims of sexual assault and sexual harassment in the country.
