Rifat murder: Rishan Farazi placed on 5-day remand

A Barguna court has placed Md Rashidul Hasan Rishan alias Rishan Farazi, another key suspect in the case filed, over the murder of Rifat Sharif, on a 5-day remand.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Sirajul Islam Gazi of Barguna court gave the remand order after Rishan was produced before court with a 7-day remand prayer by police, around 10am on Friday.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Barguna Sadar police station Inspector (Investigation) Humayun Kabir, also the investigation officer for this case, said: “We appealed for a 7-day remand for Rishan to question him further and for the sake of proper investigation of the case.

“However, the judge granted a 5-day remand after taking every argument into consideration.”

Rishan Farazi is the younger brother of another key suspect in the same murder case, Rifat Farazi, who has also been arrested.

A police team, led by Barguna police Additional Superintendent Shahjahan Hossain conducted a drive and arrested the accused Rishan Thursday morning, Barguna police Superintendent Maruf Hossain said during a press conference at his office.

On Tuesday, a Barguna court placed Ayesha Siddiqua Minni, wife of murdered Barguna youth Rifat Sharif, on five day remand.

Earlier that day, police detained Minni from her father's residence at the Nayakata Maitya area in the district town for questioning. After a long interrogation, she was arrested around 9pm as initial evidence pointed to her involvement in the murder.

To date, 15 people have been arrested in connection with the brutal murder. Among the arrested suspects, 13 have given statements confessing to their involvement in Rifat’s murder, including Rifat’s wife Minni. The prime accused, Nayan Bond, was killed in a reported gunfight on July 2.

Rifat Sharif, 22, was hacked to death in front of his wife Minni, by criminals in broad daylight, in the district town on June 26. Police also have CCTV footage of the incident.

Rifat’s father filed a murder case with Barguna police station against 12 named and five or six unknown attackers.
