Supreme Court stays ex-MP Rana’s bail till July 8

The Appellate Division has stayed the bail granted by the High Court, to former Awami League MP Amanur Rahman Khan Rana, till July 8.

The bail was granted in a case filed over the killing of two Jubo League leaders, reports UNB.

The four-member bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the order on Monday.

The court also asked the state counsel to file a regular leave to appeal petition by July 8.

Earlier on June 20, the Appellate Division stayed the High Court order that had granted permanent bail to former MP Rana in the case till July 1.

Barrister Monsurul Haque Chowdhury stood for Rana while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Deputy Attorney General Dr Md Bashir Ullah represented the state.

The High Court on June 19 granted permanent bail to Rana in the case.

Baghil union Jubo League leaders Mohammad Shamim and Mohammad Mamun went missing on July 16, 2012 in the district town.

The following day, Shamim's mother filed a general diary with Tangail Sadar police station.

Later, police arrested several suspects over the incident when two of the arrestees - Shahadat Hossain, 16, and Hiron Mia, 27 - revealed that both Jubo League leaders were murdered as instructed by MP Rana.

Rana surrendered to the Tangail Additional District and Session Judge’s court on September 18, 2016 ending his 22-month fugitive run in the freedom fighter murder case.

The AL leader went into hiding after he was accused of killing freedom fighter and member of district unit AL Faruk Ahmed.

On January 18, 2013, the Awami League leader was shot dead in front of his residence in the district town.

Later, Faruk's wife Nahar Ahmed filed a case in this connection.
