A Dhaka Special Tribunal, sentenced three Myanmar nationals, suspected of being involved in the Burdwan blast in India, to ten years in prison, yesterday.
Judge Md Rabiul Alam of Dhaka Special Tribunal-4, pronounced the verdict in presence of two of the accused, in the case filed under the Explosive Substances Act, in 2014.
The tribunal also fined the convicts Tk10,000 each.
Previously, on April 4, the court had fixed yesterday (April 28) as the date for delivering its verdict, after hearing concluding arguments in the case.
The convicts—Md Nur Hossain alias Rafikul Islam of Danespara, Arakan, Yasir Arafat of Sanghasuradha, Maungdaw, and Omar Karim of Pikarang, Patharkillah—are Islamic extremists.
While Nur and Arafat are currently in jail, Karim is on the run.
Acting on a tip-off, Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested the convicts, who had explosives with them, from Palasi intersection near Sir Salimullah Muslim Orphanage, Azimpur on November 30, 2014.
DB Sub-Inspector, SM Raisul Islam filed a case the very next day.
At the conclusion of investigations, DB Sub-Inspector, Md Abdul Kader Mia submitted a chargesheet against the three to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, on March 3, 2015.
According to the first information report (FIR) of the case, these three were also suspected of being involved in the 2014 Burdwan blast case in Hooghly district of India.
A total of nine witnesses out of 18 testified before the court since recording of their depositions.
All three accused are members of the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO), and other Myanmar-based militant outfits.
