Retired Justice Manik summoned over defamatory remarks against CJ

A Dhaka court on Wednesday summoned a retired justice over defamatory remarks against Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate AKM Moinuddin Siddiqui summoned Justice Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik in a case filed the same day after recording a statement of the complainant. The justice was asked to appear before the court on May 25 to give his statement regarding the allegations. Advocate Arfan Uddin Khan, former president of Dhaka Metropolitan Bar, filed the case under section 500 and 501 of the penal code with the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court. According to the complainant's statement, Justice Manik called the chief justice a “self-confessed razakar and an anti-liberation element” during a talk show on the TV channel DBC News on March 15. On March 16, a Supreme Court lawyer issued a legal notice to the justice asking him to withdraw his statement within 72 hours or face legal action.
