Next hearing in Cesare Tavella murder trial on April 18

A Dhaka court on Monday adjourned till April 18 the hearing in the case lodged over Italian national Cesare Tavella’s murder in 2015.

Metropolitan Sessions Judge Imrul Qayes set the date as the defence cross examined witness Dr Shafikul Islam of United Hospital and failed to conclude, reports BSS.

Tavella, 50, was gunned down by unidentified assailants on the footpath of Road No 90 in Gulshan 2 on September 28, 2015.

He was the then project manager of Profitable Opportunities for Food Security (Proofs), a project of Netherlands-based organisation ICCO Cooperation.

A Dhaka court on October 25, 2016, framed charges against BNP leader MA Qayum, his brother MA Matin and five others.

According to police, Qayum planned Tavella’s murder as part of a conspiracy to create anarchy, put pressure on the government and send a message to foreigners that they were not safe in Bangladesh.

Matin coordinated and hired three assassins to carry out the murder.

The other five accused are Tamjid Ahmed alias Rubel, Russell Chowdhury, Minhajul Arefin alias Bhaigna Russel, Sakhawat Hossain and Bhangari Sohel.

Of the seven accused, only Qayum and Sohel are still on the run.
