The High Court has asked Green Line Paribahan to pay within two weeks Tk50 lakh as compensation to Rasel Sarkar, who lost his leg in an accident in Dhaka’s Dholaipar area on April 28 last year.
The bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the order after hearing a petition on Tuesday.
Advocate Khandaker Shamsul Haq Reza stood for the petitioner, Mohammad Ajiullah stood for the bus operating company and deputy attorney general Abdullah al Mahmud Bashar represented the state.
The court also fixed March 31 for next hearing and asked the authorities concerned to submit a report on Rasel’s treatment expense.
Earlier, on May 14 last year, the High Court had issued a rule asking why private car driver Rasel, 23, should not get Tk1 crore as compensation.
Green Line Paribahan was asked to respond to the rule within four weeks.
On April 28 that year, a luxury Green Line coach had rear-ended the car Rasel was driving from behind on the slope of Mayor Md Hanif Flyover in Dholaipar, leading Rasel to step out of the car to assess the damage.
Although he signalled the bus not to drive away, bus driver Kabir Hossain in his attempt to flee the scene had run over Rasel, severing his left leg from thigh down in the process.
Being informed, police jumped into action and impounded the bus and detained Kabir from near the National Press Club.
