The High Court has directed lower courts across the country to resolve cases related to illegal narcotics within the next six months.
Drug-related cases—of which courts have taken cognizance of charge-sheets—will fall under the above-mentioned High Court directive.
A High Court bench comprised of Justices M Enayetur Rahim and Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order on Tuesday, while hearing the bail plea of a person accused in a drug-related case.
Attorney General Yusuf Mahbub Morshed represented the state, while Advocate Fazlur Rahman represented the accused.
The court also directed the deputy commissioner, superintendents of police and officers-in-charge (OCs) throughout the country to make a serious effort to resolve these cases. Investigation officers (IOs) and concerned law officials were also ordered to help resolve drug-related cases by the deadline.
The High Court bench then stated that those failing to resolve narcotics cases within the specified time limit will be held accountable.
Police filed a case against Mizanur Rahman in 2015 after detaining him with 600 yaba tablets. A case was filed against him with a Madaripur police station. The accused remains incarcerated since his arrest.
The case IO is yet to present a witness before the court. The High Court granted bail to Mizanur, after he filed a petition seeking interim bail.
