A Lakshmipur court has granted bail to former lawmaker and BNP Publicity Affairs Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie in a case filed over election violence.
Judge Md Shah-e Noor of Lakshmipur Sessions Judge Court passed the bail order on Tuesday afternoon.
According to court sources, on the morning of December 24, 2018, around 25 BNP and six Awami League men, along with two police officials, were injured in a clash between supporters of the rival parties.
The clash began when Annie, who was the Oikya Front candidate from Lakshmipur 3 in the December 30 general election, was campaigning near Shantirhaat Bazaar in Kushakhali union of Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila.
A case was filed with Chandraganj police station against Annie, his brother, Happy Chowdhury, and 146 activists of BNP, Juba Dal, Chhatra Dal and other affiliated organizations of the party.
Kushakhali UP Chairman and Awami League leader Nurul Amin filed the case on December 25 in connection with the previous day's clash. Another 200 unnamed BNP activists were also accused in the same case.
On December 26, the High Court granted Annie bail for four weeks and asked him to appear before the Lakshmipur District Sessions Judge Court.
Thus, on Tuesday, Annie and Happy appeared before the court, where they were granted bail after hearing of both sides.
Lawyers representing the accused were Advocate Syed Shamsul Alam and Advocate Hasibur Rahman.
Meanwhile, Lakshmipur Judge Court’s Public Prosecutor Advocate Jashim Uddin and Advocate Russel Mahmud Manna stood for the plaintiff.
