Kushtia court rejects hotelier's bail plea again

A Kushtia court has rejected another bail petition filed by Bishu, the hotelier who was arrested for allegedly harassing a US photojournalist staying in his hotel in the middle of the night in a drunken state. The Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Kushtia sent Bishu back to jail after rejecting his second bail petition on Wednesday, only a day after it rejected his first bail plea submitted by his counsels. The court also rejected a petition filed by police to place Bishu on remand. Police detained Bishu from Chhoy Rasta intersection in Kushtia town around 1pm on Monday and questioned him at the Sadar police station over the allegation, which he denied. His detention followed an executive magistrate order issued on Monday morning asking police to investigate the allegation, filed in writing by freelance photojournalist Allison Joyce on March 9.

Joyce complained that around 1am on March 6, the accused had been drunk and tried to gain access to her room, hurled abuses and called on her phone repeatedly for half an hour. She left the hotel after a local friend came to her aid. Another hotel, Rose View, refused to check her in as a guest because she was a woman travelling alone. She termed the situation a nightmare and shared the experiences on Facebook, prompting some rights activists and journalists to raise the issue and demand justice. Bishu later claimed that he had knocked the door to enquire about her discomfort caused by a sound system near her room.
