HC orders to admit Barrister Mainul to BSMMU immediately

The High Court on Thursday has directed the government to immediately admit jailed Barrister Mainul Hosein to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for treatment.

The High Court bench, comprising of Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed and Justice MdIqbal Kabir Lytton, gave the directive after hearing a petition filed by Mainul's wife, Saju Hossain.

In the petition, the petitioner said that Mainul is physically ill and he needs to be admitted to a hospital immediately for treatment.

Earlier, the BSMMU authorities submitted a report to the High Court saying that Mainul is physically ill.

Mainul Husein is now in Dhaka Central Jail. He was arrested on October 22, 2018 in a case filed for defaming journalist Masuda Bhatti on a TV program.

He was produced in court on October 23. Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaisarul Islam ordered law enforcement agencies to take him to the central jail in Keraniganj.

On November 3, Mainul was sent to Rangpur jail.

On November 10, a writ was filed challenging the government's inaction on the treatment of Mainul, and the incident of him getting assaulted in Rangpur court.

Mainul is accused in 22 cases and has so far secured bail in six of them.
