The High Court on Sunday granted bail to BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury in a case filed under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act.
A High Court bench comprising of Justices Md Rezaul Haque and Zafar Ahmed granted the bail following a petition filed by his lawyer Advocate Zainul Abedin and Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon.
Earlier on October 21,the Chittagong Metropolitan Session Judge Akbar Hossain Mridha sent Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury to jail rejecting his bail petition in the case, reports UNB.
Later, Khosru's lawyer filed petition with the High Court challenging the lower court order.
The High Court issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the BNP leader should not be given permanent bail. It also granted bail to him until disposal of the rule.
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Chittagong city unit acting general secretary Jakaria Dastagir filed the case under sections 57 (2) of ICT Act and 15 (3) of Special Power Act with Kotwali police station on August 4.
Earlier, a reported audio clip of a telephonic conversation between the BNP leader and an unknown man – about intensifying the ongoing student movement – went viral on Facebook and YouTube.
