A Khulna court on Tuesday sentenced nine to life term imprisonment for the murder of Kabir Hossain Palash, vice-president, Jessore district unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of BNP, in 2013.
The judge of Khulna’s Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal, Md Abdur Rab Hawlader, passed the order in the afternoon.
The convicts are Tariqul Islam, son Shafi Mian of Shastitala in Jessore town, Prince alias Bihari Paul , son of Beleayet Hossain of Chachrara Roypara, Zahidul Islam, son of Moslem Uddin of Garikhana road , Robiul Sheikh, son of Mojibur Sheikh of Ghop Boubazar area, Sajal, son of Zahidur Rahman of Ghop Naopara area, Tutul Gazi, son of Siddiqur Rahman, Faisal Gazi, son of Firoz Ali of Bezpara, Shahidul Islam Khan alias Saidul, son of Billal Khan of Railgate area and Shahidul Islam, son of Abdur Razzaque of Bagharpara.
The court also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each, in default, one year more rigorous imprisonment.
Two others accused, Al Masud Rana alias Masud and Razzaque Fakir also got released.
According to the prosecution, the JCD leader was shot dead at a tea stall near the district in Jessore town at around 6:30pm on December 9, 2013.
Emdadul Haque Sheikh, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said the criminals riding two motorbikes hurled a crude bomb at Palash when he was having tea at a tea stall in the Civil Court area of the town around 7:00 pm.
The victim’s sister Farhana Yeasmin filed a case with Kotwali Police station on December 13 in this connection.
The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) pressed charges against eleven accused of the killing.
According to the statement, they killed the JCD leader following feud over dropping a tender.
