Husband gets 10 years in jail for pushing Sifat into suicide

The husband of Rajshahi University student Wahida Sifat has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for driving his wife to commit suicide.
The convict is Md Asif Prisley.
Judge Md Sayeed Ahmed of the Speedy Trial Tribunal 3 pronounced the verdict on Monday, reports Bangla Tribune.
The court also acquitted three other accused in the case. They are Sifat’s father-in-law Mohammad Hossain Ramjan, mother-in-law Najmun Nahar Najli and the then Rajshahi Medical College Hospital’s forensic department head Dr Zobaidur Rahman.
Sifat, who was a student of the Journalism and Mass Communication department, was found dead at her in-laws’ house in Mahishbathan area of Rajshahi city on March 29, 2015.
In the first autopsy report, Dr Zobaidur Rahman had stated that Sifat committed suicide. He submitted the autopsy report without the viscera report.
Later, Sifat’s body was exhumed on June 21, 2015 and the second autopsy found evidence of murder.
Sifat’s body had several marks of injuries.
A murder case was filed by Sifat’s uncle Mizanur Rahman Khondokar at Rajpara police station on April 2, 2015.
CID’s Senior Assistant Superintendent Ahmed Ali, also the investigation officer in the case, submitted a charge sheet against four persons at Rajshahi Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on March 23 last year.
Following a petition of the plaintiff, the case was transferred to Dhaka’s speedy trial tribunal on July 12.
Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal 3 framed charges against the four accused on November 10.
