Quota movement leader Rashed denied bail, sent to jail again

A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent quota reform movement leader Rashed Khan to jail again, rejecting his bail petition in a case filed over vandalizing the residence of Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman in the early hours of April 9.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court Judge Asaduzzaman Noor issued the order after Detective Branch (DB) of police’s Inspector Md Fazlur Rahman, also the case investigation officer, produced Rashed before the court after completion of his 10-day remand.

Rashed is one of the joint conveners of Bangladesh General Students' Rights Protection Council (BGSRPC), which is spearheading the nationwide movement seeking reformation of the existing quota system in government jobs since February.

On July 8, Rashed was put on a 10-day fresh remand on expiry of his five-day remand in a case filed under the ICT Act.

On July 1, Rashed was arrested from Bhasantek area of the city after Al Nahian Khan Joy, the legal affairs secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League, filed that case at Shahbagh police station.

Later, police also showed him arrested in another case filed over vandalizing the DU VC’s house and obstructing police duty.

Rashed is one of the BGSRPC joint conveners who were arrested in the past few weeks in the cases.
