A Dhaka court has sentenced Destiny Group Director Mejbahuddin Swapan to three years in jail for failing to file his wealth statement.
Judge Md Shahidul Islam of Special Judge’s Court 7 handed down the jail term as well as a Tk5,000 fine on Monday, with the accused in absentia.
Mejbahuddin Swapan has been absconding since the case was originally filed. The Destiny director will have to spend an additional three months in jail if he fails to pay the fine.
Case documents reveal that the Anti-Corruption Commission had served a notice to Swapan on April 10, 2016, asking him to file his wealth statement. ACC Assistant Director Mujajir Hossain filed a case with Ramna police on June 28 the same year, after the Destiny official did not respond to the notice.
The investigation officer pressed charges in court against the accused on March 20 last year. The court framed charges on August 18, 2017, and all nine witnesses have testified before the court.
