Journalist Shimul killing: Shahjadpur Mayor Miru, five others put on remand

A Sirajganj court has given police five days to interrogate Shahjadpur Mayor Halimul Haque Miru and five others in custody in journalist Abdul Hakim Shimul murder case. Shahjadpur upazila Senior Judicial Magistrate (cognisance) court sent the men on remand on Monday morning. Police prayed the suspects be placed in their custody for seven days for interrogation but the court granted five days, District and Sessions Judge's Court Additional Public Prosecutor Abul Kashem said. Other accused in the case include an expelled local Awami League leader. Hundreds of people thronged the court premises in the morning, demanding maximum penalty for the accused. Shimul, upazila correspondent of the Daily Samakal, was shot on February 2 during a clash between a Chhatra League faction and Miru's gang. He died the next day. Shimul's wife accused the mayor, his brother and 16 others in a murder case on February 3. Ten of the suspects have been arrested.
