9 to die for Gazipur college student murder

A Gazipur court has sentenced nine people to death for murdering a college student in 2010. Additional District and Sessions Judge Fazle Elahi Bhuiya passed the order on Wednesday. The court fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each. They have been sentenced to a six-month and two-year jail terms on two other charges. The convicts are Selim, Asadul Islam, Jahirul Islam, Jewel, Bakka Suman, Touhidul Islam, Arif, Hanif and Ripon Ahmed Jewel, all hailing from the Gazipur City Corporation area. Of them, Selim, Asadul Islam, Jewel and Hanif have been tried were on run. Additional Public Prosecutor Ataur Rahman said 22-year-old Shahadat was a student of Bhawal Badare Alam Government College. Following an altercation, the convicts attacked Sohag with sharp weapons at Rajbari ground on January 8, 2010. He was declared dead when taken to a local hospital. Later, the victim's father lodged a case with Joydebpur Police Station in this connection.
