Khaleda can’t leave country without court’s permission

A Dhaka court has ordered BNP Chairperson  Khaleda Zia to seek permission from the court before making any further plans to travel abroad. “Khaleda Zia will have to take permission from the court if she wants to leave the country for treatment,” Judge Dr Akhtaruzzaman of Dhaka Special Judges Court 5 said during the bail petition hearing of the BNP chief on Thursday. The court granted bail to Khaleda in Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust graft cases upon payment of a bond of Tk1 lakh each. The same court had issued an arrest warrant against her in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on October 12.

The BNP chairperson returned to Dhaka on Wednesday, after a 96-day trip to London for her medical treatment. She reached Bakshibazar court premises at around 12:15pm on Thursday. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case in 2008 against six people, including Khaleda and her eldest son Tarique Rahman, for allegedly misusing Tk2.1 crore from the funds of the Zia Orphanage Trust. In addition, in 2011, the ACC accused the BNP chief and three others of misappropriating Tk3.15 crore from the Zia Charitable Trust Fund.
