Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Tuesday urged the government to scrap forever all direct and indirect scopes for whitening undisclosed money by promulgating an ordinance.
TIB urged the finance adviser to take steps to immediately scrap some of the corruption-friendly, unconstitutional and discriminatory provisions to set an example.
In a press release, TIB said that such amnesty for whitening undisclosed wealth has been given around 21 times under different regimes since the country's independence, which discourages honest taxpayers, helps award corruption and ensures its spread.
TIB said the previous authoritarian government gave such amnesty without any question for the current fiscal year (FY25), but after taking office, the interim government scrapped such provision of whitening undisclosed money through paying a 15% tax.
TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said that they strongly demand the government scrap some of the existing provisions allowing the scope for whitening undisclosed wealth, which is also contradictory to Section 20 (2) of the constitution.
He also hoped to get a positive reflection in this regard, saying a formal letter has already been sent to the finance adviser.
