The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed two separate cases against former Awami League MP AKM Awal and his wife Lyla Parveen, on allegations of amassing illegal wealth around Tk44 crore.
The commission’s Deputy Director Md Ali Akbar filed the cases at its Integrated District Office 1 in Dhaka on Wednesday.
ACC Director (Public Relations Officer) Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
Earlier on December 30, ACC filed three cases against the couple for grabbing government lands.
In the same month on December 24, the commission imposed a travel ban on the former Awami League lawmaker and his wife for grabbing the government lands.
A letter regarding the ban was signed by ACC Deputy Director Ali Akbar and sent to the Special Branch of Police, Department of Immigration.
According to the case files, former ruling party lawmaker AKM Awal, misusing his power while in office, leased government land by providing false information and built a three storied building there in his wife's name.
Later, that building was rented to Pirojpur Rural Electrification Association.
In a separate incident, the couple grabbed another piece of government land in Swarupkati upazila of the district and built a mansion there.
The former ruling party lawmaker and his wife have also been accused of grabbing half-acre of government land and building an illegal wall around it in Pirojpur district.
The anti-graft body then sent a notice to the accused couple, asking them to submit their wealth statements, said the ACC official.
