Dhaka University has suspended four teachers following the recommendations of an investigation committee, with a tribunal formed against three of them over allegations of a controversial stand in the July uprising upheld by the committee.
Another separate investigation committee was formed against a fourth teacher over allegations of academic qualification fraud.
The three teachers referred to the tribunal are Professor Dr M Wahiduzzaman and Professor Dr Muhammad Mahbubur Rahman, both of the Institute of Education and Research, and Professor Dr Mashiur Rahman of the Department of Sociology.
The fourth, Associate Professor Dr Md Ziaur Rahman, known publicly by his stage name, Saim Rana, of the Department of Music, was suspended and made subject to a separate probe over allegations that he did not hold the qualifications required for the post as he completed his Honours and Master's in Islamic Studies, while the department's recruitment notice required an Honours and Master's in Music.
Confirming the actions, Dhaka University Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane told Dhaka Tribune: "And [Institute of Education and Research] Professor Dr M Wahiduzzaman, Professor Dr Muhammad Mahbubur Rahman, and Professor Dr Mashiur Rahman of Sociology, based on student complaints and the investigation committee finding them guilty over action in July uprising, they've been suspended and a tribunal has been formed against them."
"And, for Associate Professor Ziaur Rahman of the Music department, an investigation committee has been formed against him, and he's been suspended. Because he did his Honours-Master's in Islamic Studies but became a teacher in the Music department," he added.
