The Dhaka University Syndicate has cancelled the studentship of Golam Rabbani, former general secretary of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, and declared Rashed Khan general secretary (GS) of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu), seven years and five months after the 2019 election.
Rabbani had been declared the winner of the GS post in the 2019 Ducsu election with 10,484 votes, while Rashed came second with 6,063 votes.
The decision came after the university’s Academic Council cancelled Rabbani’s studentship in its MPhil programme.
Rashed announced the development in a post on his verified Facebook page on Monday.
A former Dhaka University student, Rashed is currently serving as the political assistant to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
In his Facebook post, Rashed wrote: “Alhamdulillah, Alhamdulillah, Alhamdulillah.”
He said a university-formed investigation committee had found Rabbani’s MPhil studentship to be invalid. Rabbani also failed to provide an appropriate response to a show-cause notice issued by the university syndicate, he said.
Following the cancellation of Rabbani’s studentship at a meeting of the Academic Council, his Ducsu position was also cancelled. The Syndicate then declared Rashed, who received the second-highest number of votes in the 2019 election, as GS.
2019 Ducsu election
The Ducsu election was held on March 11, 2019.
According to the results announced by the election commission, Nurul Haque Nur won the vice-president (VP) post with 11,062 votes.
His closest rival was Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon, then central president of Chhatra League, who received 9,129 votes.
Rabbani won the GS post with 10,484 votes, while Rashed came second with 6,063 votes.
Earlier, on November 26, 2025, the Academic Council cancelled Rabbani’s studentship in the MPhil programme and declared his position as Ducsu GS invalid.
