Coal-laden lighterage vessel capsizes in Bay

A lighterage vessel carrying 900 tonnes of coal capsized yesterday afternoon in the Bay of Bengal’s Sandwip Channel.

However, the nine crews of the vessel were rescued within couple of hours after the incident.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority’s Joint Director M Akkas Ali told the Dhaka Tribune that the Khulna-bound vessel, MV Master Sohag, capsized near Vashanchar area of the channel around 12:30pm after colliding head-on with a buoy due rough weather.

He said the vessel started capsizing soon after the incident. Two nearby vessels later rescued the nine crews around 2pm, he added.

Bangladesh Coast Guard Zonal Commander (East) Captain Shahidur Rahaman said they had sent three rescue ships to the spot but the crews were rescued before their arrival.
