An orphan girl has reportedly committed suicide at Government Shishu Paribar(orphanage) at Maijdee Bazar under the Sadar upazila on Friday morning.
The girl, Asma Akter 10, a student of class four of the orphanage school, had an altercation with her room-mates over a trivial matter in the morning, said Shilpi Bhowmick, deputy superintendent of the orphanage.
Quoting the Asma’s room-mates, she said: “Asma engaged in an altercation with her room-mate Farhana around 9:30am. At one stage, another room-mate Ratri took Farhana's side and criticised Asma for her ill-behaviour.”
“When Ratri and Farhana went out of the room, Asma locked the doors from inside and hanged herself from a ceiling fan. Around 10am, her room-mates tried to enter the room but found it locked from inside.”
“They called Asma to come out several times and failing to get her response, they broke the glasses of the window and found her hanging from the ceiling,” added Shilpi.
Being informed, the police recovered the body.
