Buet teacher sued for criticising Kamaruzzaman’s execution

A sedition case was filed yesterday against Buet teacher Jahangir Alam for making “provocative” comments regarding the execution of war criminal Muhammad Kamaruzzaman on Facebook.

Siyam Hossain, a student of Dr MM Rashid Hall, filed the case with Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court against Jahangir, an associate professor of civil engineering department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet).

After recording statements of the complainant, Metropolitan Magistrate Shariar Mahmud Adnan directed the Shahbagh police to register the case as an FIR after taking government approval.

According to the case statement, the teacher reportedly criticised the execution of Kamruzzaman, a senior Jamaat-e-Islami leader, on a Facebook page on Saturday.

After the hanging, a Buet student named Dipu Sarkar posted the status “Kamaruzzaman’s hanging conducted” on a page of Buet student’s alumni group named “Aari Pete Shona.”

In his comment, the accused teacher termed the verdict against Kamaruzzaman and the subsequent execution “injustice.”

Jahangir said: “This will never happen. Wait and see. Day by day you all will turn into even worse than what the Razakars were. Injustice never leads to something good.” When some students protested his comments, Jahangir further commented: “Joy India! Joy muscle power! Joy nasty politics! Joy injustice!”
