12 killed in Dhaka tin-shed house collapse

The death toll in Dhaka tin-shed house collapse has risen to 12 with the recovery of another body in the early hours of Thursday.

Of the deceased, two were pronounced dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Sento Chandra Das, ASI of the police outpost of the college, told the Dhaka Tribune. They are Nizam Kha, 45, and Mizan Kha, 35.

Rescuers pulled 10 other bodies from the wreckage of the two-storey tin-shed house.

The two-storey house in the capital’s Rampura Boubazar area collapsed around 3pm Wedenesday. The house was built with tin and bamboos on a water-body.

The owner of the house is Muniruzzaman, a leader of Malibagh Jubo League South Committee.

“Fire brigades personnel have so far recovered nine bodies from the spot,” Major AKM Shakil Newaz, acting DG of Fire Service and Civil Defence, told the Dhaka Tribune around 8:30pm Wednesday.

Md Farid Uddin, ADC of police in Motijheel zone, said: “Rescuers recovered another body around 1am (Thursday).”

Six units of the fire service were conducting the rescue operation, said Ziaur Rahman, telephone operator of fire service control room.

The ground floor of the two-storey tin-shed house sank into the water-body at Boubazar (Jhilpar), near Matir Masjid, at Rampura around 3pm, said AGM Nurul Haque, deputy director of Dhaka district Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Dhaka district administration has announced to provide Tk20,000 for each of the deceased and Tk5,000 for each of the injured person, said Tejgaon circle police official Shakil Ahmed.

Rajuk Chairman GM Zainul Abedin Bhuiyan told the Dhaka Tribune that they have formed a three member committee led by Abdur Rahman to probe into the incident. The committee will submit its report within seven days.

The Dhaka district administration has also formed a three member probe committee led by ADC Md Shahidul Islam. The committee have been asked to submit its report within five days, said DC Tofazzal Hossain Mia.
