The sunken trawler that capsized in the Shitalakshya River on Sunday afternoon in Mulagaon area under Kaliganj upazila in Gazipur district has been salvaged.
Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Nurul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune: “The sunken trawler was salvaged at 9:20pm on Sunday.”
He said no body was found in the salvaged trawler.
He added that there were some 26 passengers in the trawler that started Kaliganj municipality area for Danga under Palash upazila.
“All the passengers boarded on the trawler managed to reach the shore of the river,” the DC said.
However, locals claimed that there were some 45 passengers boarded in the trawler. Of them, some 24 passengers managed to reach the shore of the river and at least 20 passengers went missing.
The incident took place during a collision between a passenger trawler and two sand-laden trawlers around 4pm on Sunday, said Sub-inspector (SI) Tarikul Islam of Kaliganj police.
At that time, the trawler collided with two other sand-laden trawlers coming from the opposite direction. The passenger trawler capsized immediately, the official said.
