Activists in Kolkata staged two plays protesting the killings of bloggers, Avijit Roy and Oyashikur Babu, in Uttar Para, Howrah Shrine in Kolkata on Sunday afternoon.
Condemning the attacks on free thinkers in recent times, Rabindra Natya Goshthi and Students Against Fundamentalism brought in the two plays followed by protest songs.
Earlier, the activists organised a rally at the same venue calling everyone to stand united against fundamentalism.
Sandipan Dhar, an organiser of the ongoing movement against the attacks on the free thinkers in Kolkata, said: “We have to stand against any form of religious fundamentalism.”
Abash Munshi said: “Movement should start from our doorstep to uproot the evil of fundamentalism from every level of the society. We have to form a society where our future generation can think rationally.”
Anupam Das Adhikari, Arnab Ghosh and Samirendra Sarker spoke among others.
Kalinga Award winner former chairman of National Children's Science Congress N K Sehgal, and member of Bharat Gyan-Vigyan Samiti Kalwant Singh, expressed solidarity to the protest.
Quoting a statement of N K Sehgal, Sandipan Dhar said: “The more people will emerge as rationalists, atheists, and humanists the stronger the society becomes. They are scared by our writings as education motivates one to accept truth.”
In a message given to the event, Kalwant Singh denounced fundamentalism by terming it as “an idea or act that divides human beings for petty causes.”
