The Dhaka Central Jail authorities have not yet received the copy of war crimes convict Mohammad Kamaruzzaman's review rejection verdict on Tuesday, a day after it was pronounced.
Senior Jail Super Forman Ali confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.
Forman said: “The jail authorities did not receive the copy of the review rejection verdict from the Office of SC Registrar till Tuesday evening.”
While contacted, SC Registrar Syed Aminul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune: “The papers are supposed to be sent to the jail authorities from the registrar office. But, we are yet to get the signed copy of the verdict.”
Earlier on Monday, both the authorities of Dhaka Central Jail and SC Registrar Office said the documents related to the death row Jamaat leader's review rejection order could not be released as the apex court judges were yet to sign it.
The issue of seeking presidential mercy by the Jamaat top brass also could not be sorted out till the evening as the copy of the review verdict was not released.
Replying to a query, Forman Ali said: “Upon receiving the copy, we will read it out to Kamaruzzaman and ask him whether he would seek the presidential clemency.”
The SC upheld Kamaruzzaman’s death sentence for killing 144 villagers at Sohagpur village in Sherpur during the 1971 Liberation War
Kamaruzzaman’s lawyers filed the petition on March 5 seeking review of the death penalty upheld by the Appellate Division on November 3 last year.
He is the second war crimes convict, who filed a review petition with the top court.
Another Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Molla was executed on December 12, 2013.
