SC upholds Kamaruzzaman's death penalty

The Supreme Court has upheld the death penalty of condemned war criminal Muhammad Kamaruzzaman for killing 144 villagers at Sohagpur village in Sherpur during the 1971 Liberation War.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will visit her youngest son Arafat Rahman Koko's grave to offer prayers.

Jamaat calls hartal for Tuesday, Wednesday

Jamaat-e-Islami has called hartal for Tuesday and Wednesday protesting the Supreme Court's verdict that upheld the death penalty to its leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman for crimes against humanity during Liberation War.

The party made the announcement through a statement posted on its website on Monday morning. 

'Kamaruzzaman execution after disposal of mercy'

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam has said the government will decide over Kamaruzzaman’s execution after disposal of presidential mercy and his meeting with family members.

He made the statement following the SC verdict that rejected war criminal Kamaruzzaman’s review petition and upheld death sentence on Monday morning.

Moncho to continue sit-in until Kamaruzzaman's execution

Welcoming the verdict, Gonojagoron Moncho has begun a sit-in program in the capital’s Shahbagh demanding the quick execution of the death penalty handed over to war criminal Muhammad Kamaruzzaman.

Moncho spokesperson Imran H Sarkersaid: “We will stay at Shahbagh till Kamaruzzaman’s execution as there is no bar to execute him now.”

A person has been killed after his relatives threw him off the rooftop of a three-storey building at Dewanpara in Bhashantek of the capital.

The deceased is Anwar Dewan, 45.

1 killed in Bagerhat 'gunfight'

The chief of Bellal Bahini has been killed in a ”gunfight” with law enforcers at Shoronkhola upazila in Bagerhat.

The deceased is Bellal Firozi, 35, son of Khokon Firozi of South Shoralia village and the chief of the forest bandit group  Bellal Bahini.

Dhaka-Sylhet-Chittagong rail service resumes

Train communication on the Dhaka-Sylhet-Chittagong routes has been resumed after seven hours of suspension.

Bhairab police station OC Saidul Islam said the rail link was restored around 9am Monday.

2 electrocuted in Khilgaon

Two people have died after being electrocuted when they came in touch with a live electric wire hanging near their building at Tilpapara area in Khilgaon.

The deceased are Anowar, 60, owner of the building and Abdur Razzak, 45, a tenant of the same building.
