DNCC polls: Mintoo's appeal rejected

Mayoral aspirant in Dhaka North City Corporation polls BNP leader Abdul Awal Mintoo's appeal, challenging the cancellation of his nomination, has been rejected.

Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Md Zillar Rahman, also the appellate authority of the Dhaka City Corporations polls, passed the order after conducted the hearing on Saturday afternoon.

Terming the judgement as “politically motivated,” Mintoo’s lawyer Mahbub Uddin Khokon told reporters: “We do not accept the order. We will knock the doors of the higher court to get judgement.”

On Wednesday, Returning Officer Shah Alam of Dhaka North City Corporation cancelled Mintoo’s nomination because the individual who collected the aspirant’s nomination papers was not listed as a voter in the would-be candidate’s area.

However, Mahbub Uddin Khokon said his client’s nomination was cancelled due to a “faulty voter list” prepared by the Election Commission.”

Later, the aspirant appealed to the Dhaka divisional commissioner, challenging the cancellation of his nomination for the upcoming elections.

Returning officers accepted 19 mayoral aspirant’s nominations for the DNCC and 23 for DSCC elections. April 9 is the deadline to withdraw from the polls. The elections will held on April 28.
