3 of a family burnt in Sylhet

Three members of a family sustained burn injuries when a fire broke out at a house in Mirer Maidan area of Sylhet city.

The victims were identified as Monwara Begum, 45, wife of late Jakir Hossain, her daughter Jahida Akter, 20, and son Jahir Hossain, 14.

Jabed Hossain Md Tarek, senior station officer of Sylhet Fire Service, said the fire broke out at the toilet of the house around 11:10pm on Friday when Monwara entered it with a candle light as there was no electricity at that time, leaving the housewife burnt.

Later, her daughter and son also received burn injuries as they tried to recover their mother, the fire official said.

He said the fire might originate from the toxic gas from septic tank.

The injured were rushed to Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet.

Later, Monwara and Jahida, who received burns to 60% of their bodies, were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Locals managed to bring the fire under control before the arrival of the fire firefighting unit.

The fire gutted valuables and furniture of the house.
