Permission is now required to portray the police in film, on television and in other visual media, police authorities announced yesterday.
Negative and comic representations of the police convey the wrong message and confuse the viewing public, Additional Deputy Commissioner (media and public relations) Jahangir Alam Sarker of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) told the Dhaka Tribune.
“Prior permission must be sought from police authorities before characterising policemen in dramas and cinemas,” he added.
He said letters had been sent to television, media and film companies informing them of the decision.
Several recent cases have involved the use of police uniforms by criminals and the DMP is trying to avoid such situations, he added.
