8 die in Buriganga trawler capsize

At least eight people have been killed when a trawler on the Buriganga river sank with 50 to 60 passengers after colliding with a cargo vessel.

The incident happened near west pangaon in Keraniganj.

The dead bodies rescued are of: Md Sameer Hossain,42, son of late Lat Miah, Rubel, 18, son of Wahab Mollah, Rubel, 30, son of Hafiz Uddin, Zakir, 28, son of Nuruddin, Sagr, 10, son of Mizanur Rahman, Karamjan BiBI, 65, wife Ayub Ali, Hridoy, 12, father’s name unknown and another one is yet to be identified. All of them lived in Lalbagh.

Deceased Sameer’s brother Ripon said the incident occurred when a sand-laden cargo vessel crashed into their trawler near South Pangaon area around 1pm on Thursday.

They were returning after attending a yearly ‘Urs' (religious gathering) of Hazrat Solaiman Shah (R) at Beltoli of Matlab in Chandpur.

Offier-in-Charge of South Keraniganj police station Jamal Uddin Mir said as no relatives were seen on the bank of the river. We have suspended our search for survivours and dead bodies until Friday.

We have heard that two people might still be missing.

Deputy Commissioner Zillar Rahman has handed over Tk 20,000 to each deceased’s family and handed over the body to them without autopsy, he added.
