The Supreme Court has fixed April 5 for hearing a petition filed by Jamaat-e-Islami leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman seeking review of the top court’s verdict that upheld his death sentence given by a war crimes tribunal.
A four-member bench headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha fixed the date on Wednesday, in response to a time petition filed by the defence lawyers.
On Tuesday, Kamaruzzaman’s lawyers submitted the time plea saying that Khandker Mahbub, also an adviser to the BNP chief, was physically ill and had been advised by his doctor to take rest.
Kamaruzzaman’s lawyers filed the petition on March 5 seeking review of the death penalty upheld by the Appellate Division on November 3 last year.
The full text of the Appellate Division judgement was released on February 18 and the International Crimes Tribunal the following day issued a warrant to execute the death sentence.
