Any mayoral and councilor aspirant, who was made accused in any case, can be arrested without the prior permission of Election Commission (EC).
Election Commissioner Md Shahnewaz said this while replying to the queries of journalists at his office in the capital’s Agargaon on Tuesday.
Shahnewaz said: “The police force has come under the authority of Election Commission to maintain law and order for the upcoming elections. If the police want to arrest anyone, they have no need to seek any prior permission from the EC.”
When asked how the mayoral and counsillor candidates, who are facing cases, will participate in the elections, the election commissioner said: “It was stated in the laws that who can be candidate and how they will conduct the polls.”
“In this case, the EC will act in accordance with the law.”
