Air Canada flight crashes at Halifax airport

Air Canada flight 624 has crashed on a runway at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport in Canada, according to the airline's website.

Air Canada, through their Twitter account, confirmed the crash. It read: “Confirms AC624, YYZ-YHZ exited runway upon landing at Halifax. All passengers have deplaned, going to terminal.”

According to their tweet, all passengers have deplaned and are being evacuated to the terminal, an RT news report read. They were 138 people reported to be on board, with 133 passengers and 5 crew members.

No passengers have been reported dead and the plane is set to have hit power lines and “sustained extensive” damage upon crash-landing.

“An aircraft made a poor landing,” RT has quoted airport spokesman Peter Spurway as saying. The crash took place at 12:30am local time (4:30am GMT).

Although no casualties were reported, the Air Canada website confirmed that 23 passengers and crew sustained “non-life threatening injuries.”

“Air Canada can confirm that 23 passengers and crew sustained non-life threatening injuries and have been transported to local hospitals for observation and treatment,” the statement read.

Following the crash, many across the globe expressed their support through Twitter while #AirCanada trended on the website. The news of this crash comes less than a week after a Germanwings airbus was deliberately crashed in the French Alps, killing all 150 people on board, raising questions about aviation safety in general.
